Smith Bay Watershed

St. Thomas's Watershed used to study Stormwater Pollution.

What Can You Do?

Top 10 Ways to Improve your Watershed:

  1. Maintain soakaways/septic tanks.
  2. Read the label. Use eco-friendly cleaning supplies. Use fertilizers & pesticides sparingly.
  3. Reduce sediment and nutrient run-off by creating and enhancing riparian corridors (buffer zones with planted vegetation between land and guts/wetlands).
Plant shrubs and trees to reduce erosion.
  4. Dispose of household chemicals properly.
  5. Think before you clear land! Replace, re-seed, and replant bare ground.
  6. Give water more places to go. Plant a rain garden. When re-placing/installing driveways or sidewalks, use a porous pavement that allows storm water to infiltrate.
  7. Wash cars on grass to catch runoff.
  8. Don’t litter.
  9. Participate in local watershed clean-ups!
