Marine Navigation and Adaptations

Sea turtles are perfectly adapted for a life spent almost entirely at sea, returning to land only to lay eggs on sandy beaches.

Hydrodynamic Shell

A streamlined shell (carapace) reduces water drag, enabling effortless long-distance swimming across ocean basins.

Wing-Like Flippers

Powerful front flippers propel them gracefully through open water, while rear flippers act as steering rudders.

Salt Excretion

Specialized glands behind their eyes filter excess salt from drinking seawater, creating a “crying” effect on land.

Seagrass Grazers

Serrated jaws allow Green sea turtles to crop seagrass efficiently, keeping ocean meadows healthy and thriving.

Animals in this Exhibit

• Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas).

Fun Fact! Green sea turtles can safely eat jellyfish and other stinging sea creatures using their tough flippers and sharp beaks.

Respecting Our Ocean Neighbors

Sea turtles face severe threats from plastic pollution, coastal development, and boat strikes. Coral World served for many years as a rescue, rehabilitation, and release facility for injured and sick turtles in the Virgin Islands. That work continues today through our sister nonprofit Coral World Ocean and Reef Initiative (CWORI).
