Meet Our Sharks

Sharks are master hunters equipped with extraordinary evolutionary adaptations honed over 400 million years:

Electrical Sensing

Tiny pores around their snouts, called the Ampullae of Lorenzini, detect subtle electrical fields generated by living prey.

Cartilaginous Skeletons

Lightweight, flexible cartilage skeletons make sharks far more agile in water than bony fish.

Dermal Denticles

Skin covered in tooth-like scales reduces hydrodynamic drag, enabling silent and efficient swimming.

Replaceable Teeth

Multiple rows of sharp teeth constantly cycle forward, ensuring sharks always have functional tools for hunting.

Animals in this Exhibit

• Caribbean Nurse Shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum).
• Lemon Shark (Negaprion brevirostris).

Nurse sharks are mostly nocturnal, hunting along reefs at night and resting in groups during the day.

A Head Start For Juvenile Sharks

Many Shark species face threats from overfishing and habitat destruction. Coral World operates a head-start conservation program: collecting wild juvenile sharks from local waters, raising them safely until they grow past vulnerable predator size, and tagging and releasing them back into the sea.
