Intelligent, curious, and famously vocal, South American sea lions leave an unforgettable impression. As once of only two facilities in the United States home to this remarkable species, Coral World offers a rare opportunity to connect with these charismatic ocean ambassadors up close.

Meet the South American Sea Lion

Sea lions are build for a dynamic life both on land and at sea, relying on unique physical features to thrive in both environments:

Rotating Flippers

Unlike true seals, sea lions can rotate their hind flippers forward to “walk” on land with surprising speed.

Sensitive Whiskers

Facial whiskers (vibrissae) detect subtle water vibrations, helping them navigate murky currents and track fast-moving prey.

Streamlined Hydrodynamics

Powerful foreflippers act like underwater wings, propelling them through the sea at speeds up to 20mph.

• South American Sea Lion (Otaria flavescens).

Fun Fact! Sea lions may swallow rocks, called gastroliths, which scientists believe could help with buoyancy, digestion, or fasting.

Respecting Our Ocean Neighbors

Through positive reinforcement training that emphasizes the importance of giving each animal opportunities to make their own choices, our animal care specialists build strong bonds with each sea lion to support their voluntary medical care and mental stimulation. Through hand-on education, immersive experiences, and our partnership with the Coral World Ocean and Reef Initiative (CWORI), we foster deep respect and appreciate for marine life.
