Tropical Rainforest Canopy

Adapted to the Forest

Macaws are not just beautiful—they are among the most intelligent and social birds in the world, equipped with highly specialized adaptations for forest life:

Powerful Beaks

A macaw’s beak is strong enough to crack open incredibly hard nuts and seeds, and acts as a “third foot” for climbing trees.

Vocal Communicaiton

Their loud, screeching calls allow them to communicate with their flock over vast distances in dense rainforests.

Prehensile Toes

Like lorikeets, they have zygodactyl feet (two toes forward, two backward) that give them an exceptional grip for hanging and handling food.

Long Lifespans

Macaws can live 50 to 70 years in human care, forming lifelong bonds with their caretakers and flock mates.

Animals in this Exhibit

• Blue-and-Gold Macaw (Ara ararauna).

Fun Fact! Macaws can use their powerful beaks like a third hand to climb branches and crack open tough nuts.

Threatened in the Wild

Macaws’ intelligent minds require complex mental stimulation, specialized diets, and dedicated veterinary care. The illegal pet trade and deforestation severely threaten these birds in the wild.
