Canopy Life & Adaptations

Rainbow Lorikeets are specialized parrots native to Australia and Indonesia. Their striking colors and unique feeding tools make them vital pollinators in their native habitats:

Brush-Tipped Tongue

Tiny, hair-like structures called papillae on their tongues act like a sponge to soak up nectar and pollen from flowers.

Zygodactyl Feet

With two toes pointing forward and two pointing backward, lorikeets easily climb upside-down along thin branches.

Vibrant Camouflage

Bright blue, green, and orange feathers help them blend into fruit-filled forest canopies while identifying flock mates.

Hooked Beak

A strong, curved beak serves as a climbing tool and allows them to crush seed pods and hold onto foliage.

Animals in this Exhibit

• Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus).

Fun Fact! Rainbow lorikeets use specialized, brush-tipped tongues to collect nectar and pollen from flowers.

Respecting Our Avian Ambassadors

Our aviary offers a safe sanctuary for lorikeets to flock, forage, and fly. Visitors are invited to walk gently through the canopy path and treat these birds with care. Through hands-on education, immersive experiences, and our partnership with the Coral World Ocean and Reef Initiative (CWORI), we foster deep respect and appreciation for the natural world.
