What does the typical day around the “office” look like for you?
Rachel Revolinski:
Cleaning and maintaining exhibits, feeding animals, learning new tasks, giving encounters, and interacting with guests. Always having a good time with coworkers.
CW: What is your favorite place to hang out in St Thomas?
RR: Besides Coral World. Iggies Beach Bar or Coki beach.
CW: What are your career aspirations?
RR: To travel and work with rescuing and rehabilitating marine life that has been injured or beached. Also shark research would be awesome.
CW: Tell us a fun fact about you.
RR: I’ve been competitively swimming since 10 years old, made the national team at 13 years old. Also I am a nationally ranked swimmer.
CW: What is your favorite part about interning at Coral World Ocean Park?
RR: Getting to know the staff well, and interacting with the animals. Being able to get into the exhibits with the turtles, sharks, stingrays, and fish was a great experience.
CW: To what extent do you think will the skills you have developed, and training you have received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
RR: What I have learned here so far will be a great jumpstart into my career. I am gaining such valuable knowledge, and great hands on experience.
CW: Advice you would give to anyone thinking of applying for the aquarist internship here at Coral World.
RR: Don’t be afraid to take a leap of faith. Coral World is a great opportunity that shouldn’t be passed up. It’s such an amazing place, you’ll learn a lot and have a great time doing it! It’s worth every minute. All you need is a swim suit, flip flops, sunscreen, and bug spray. Be prepared for the higher cost of living (ice cream may not be on your grocery list as much.)
